Who I am

I am an anthropological archaeologist of Andean South America. My research has centered on examining marginalized labor, power, and identity in colonial Peru, using the remains of foodways and cuisine as my primary dataset. I address both foodways and subsistence strategies associated with colonial encounters, and my research redefines what marginalized and forced labor looked like in colonial South America.

My Research Interests

Silver Mining and Refining

My recent research in Puno, Peru examines labor, power dynamics, and identity among indigenous silver miners and refiners in colonial Peru.

Ethnohistorical Research

I use my training in Spanish paleography (deciphering historical writing) to incorporate mining inspections, tax records, wills, and court cases from archives to contextualize my archaeological data.

Zooarchaeology

I use zooarchaeological methods to examine changing indigenous cuisine, foodways, and subsistence strategies in response to Spanish colonization.

GIS and Spatial Approaches

I use spatial analyses to understand the various ways people interacted in the past. This includes using ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and multivariate analyses to incorporate large datasets in my research.
